The government of India is gearing up to set up a new agency that will have the power of recalling the vehicles with engineering defects. The new agency can be considered on the lines of the USA’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In recent years, there have been a number of incidents when car makers were forced to recall their defective models. The engineering defects have been on a rise in the new age cars blessed with advanced technological features. For instance, Honda’s recent recall of Honda City sedan due to defects in the power window switch.

In a recent statement, department of heavy industries joint secretary Ambuj Sharma said, "We are contemplating a national-level body that will govern the technical and safety aspects in the fast-growing sector that is expected to double in the next five years."

At present, the number of fatalities in India is the highest in the world, and in year 2009, about 1.42 lakh people died due to driver negligence and vehicles with engineering defects.

The government plans to set-up a single-window authority – National Automotive Board – that will be taking care of all safety related issues. This will be addressing matters like crash testing to certifications for all sorts of vehicles from passengers to commercial segment.

Mr. Sharma added that there is no legal framework to address safety and other consumer issues pertaining to vehicles manufactured and sold in India, which the National Automotive Board will try to address.
