Renault, the second largest car maker in Europe, said on Tuesday that its upcoming ULC (ultra low cost car), which it plans to develop in partnership with leading two-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto has least priority till year 2012. It is to be mentioned here that the Nissan-Renault JV and Bajaj Auto have been in talks since year 2008, for developing a ULC car in the Indian market. The car was previously expected to hit the Indian roads by the first quarter of year 2012.
Speaking to reporters in the national capital, Renault India Managing Director Marc Nassif said, "As we have announced earlier, five cars are going to be launched by 2012. They are the priority and there is no ULC in this." He added that Renault cannot comment anything on the (ULC) project at this time as the company has not seen the product. According to company, its focus is on the five car models which it plans to launch in the country within next one and half year.
The Bajaj-Nissan-Renault ULC car will be shelved in the price segment sub Rs 2 lakh where it will be taking on with the likes of Tata Nano. The car is claimed to be delivering a high fuel economy of 30 kmpl.
