Every motorcycle rider at some point in time may have experienced a near death instance when a heavy vehicle missed acknowledging your presence and almost ran you over. India reporting a high number of bike crashes every year, the road transport ministry has planned to introduce Auto Headlamp On (AHO) function that serves almost like Daytime Running Lamps in cars. The technology may find way in motorbikes sometime by April 2017.
The AHO feature turns on the headlamp everytime the bike's engine comes alive. No switches would be provided to turn the headlight off. The move is expected to help see a reduction in number of crashes. The ministry is also reportedly working on chalking out a plan to introduce a sound device that would alert passerby and people around the site where the accident happens. Speaking more on the occasion, an official said, “In several cases, people trapped in vehicles in remote areas or off the main road don't get help quickly. Unlike in other countries where the horn automatically starts when a vehicle meets with an accident and works as an alert. But here we need to have a different mechanism since automatic blowing of horn won't sound abnormal to commuters or even traffic police.”
Until now only high end bikes came with this interesting safety feature and this would indeed be the first time when it could be implemented across wide range of two-wheelers. The proposal was cleared by the panel post a detailed presentation given by Automotive Research Association of India ( ARAI) to transport minister Nitin Gadkari and panel.
