Two wheelers sales in India are on continuous rise giving every reason to the auto makers to rejoice. The monthly domestic two-wheeler industry have now crossed the one million mark, reveal sales figures of March 2010. The sales chart also breached every milestone by crossing 10-million mark in last fiscal by selling 10.5 million units in 2009-10.

"With the economy growing very fast, there is enough reason to believe that the momentum in two-wheeler sales would continue," said H S Goindi, president (marketing), TVS Motor.

Most of the sales come from motorcycle sales which account for nearly 77-78 percent of total two-wheeler sales. India has a growing market for gearless scooters and the demand for them is also gradually increasing. Bajaj’s MD, Rajiv Bajaj, has already announced that the company will not product geared-scooters like Chetak anymore. It will concentrate on gearless scooters for the new and emerging Indian market. Scooters account for 15-16 percent of the market share of which largely remains dominated by gearless scooters now. Rest of the market sales come from moped sales in India. China still remains the largest two-wheeler market with annual sales of 15-16 million units in a single fiscal but India is slowly emerging as an extremely strong competitor to its neighbour.
