Toyota Yaris was launched in India for the price of Rs 8.75 lakhs (ex-showroom all-India). Toyota’s C-segment sedan available in eight trim levels with a single 1.5-litre petrol engine with either a manual or CVT automatic transmission. Toyota has introduced the Yaris with a long list of features making it a very compelling option in its segment. So here are the ups and downs if you are considering buying the all-new Toyota Yaris.
What’s good about it?
Being a Toyota, the Yaris is very Japanese in its styling. It gets a gaping grille up front flanked by sleek projector headlamps. The rear does get LED treatment on the tail lights but its design is conservative at best. The Yaris also comes with that rock-solid reliability factor associated with Toyotas. There are many first in segment features as well. The Yaris offers both manual and automatic transmission, seven airbags, ABS with EBD, powered driver’s seat, digital instrument display, all four power windows, electric mirrors, keyless entry and projector headlamps right from the base variant.
Apart from all these, there is a unique feature in the Yaris – a high solar energy absorbing (HSEA), IR cut, acoustic & vibration control glass for windshield and doors for a quieter cabin. There is a roof-mounted air vent with ambient illumination for rear passengers and hand/air gesture controlled infotainment system with Touch Screen Navigation among other features. Toyota has delivered on its promise of making the Yaris a feature-heavy model.
What’s bad about it?
No diesel. Toyota is offering the Yaris in petrol powertrain only with no plans of a diesel mill at all. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit produces 108bhp/140Nm and can be had with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed CVT. Instead of a diesel powertrain, Toyota is likely to bring in a hybrid setup for the car at a later date.
The ASEAN-spec Yaris sedan has a very subtle styling compared to its direct rivals. Internationally it is available as a hatchback body style and there seems to have been little to no efforts from the carmaker to put on the added boot for the sedan. Besides that, the 2019 edition of the Yaris sedan has already revealed for the American market with an all-new exterior design.
Best variant to buy?
We would recommend the V variant because for its price tag you get most of the recommended features. It will suffice all your needs, but it does miss out on stability control programme and hill start assist in the V trim. Apart from these two features, all the additional features in the VX trim are not must-have and can be skipped since it costs an additional lakh rupees.
