Toyota to launch the petrol Innova Crysta this Diwali

Toyota is developing a 2.7-litre petrol engine for the new Innova Crysta. This variant is expected to go on sale in India during Diwali this year.

Presently, Toyota offers the Innova Crysta only as a diesel version for the Indian market. This includes a 2.8-litre mill paired to a new six-speed automated transmission and a 2.4-litre unit matched to a five-speed manual gearbox. Toyota had earlier confirmed that they can provide additional engine options depending on the customer preference. A new 2.7-litre petrol motor is presently under development in Japan for the India-spec petrol version of the Crysta.

Sales of the diesel cars have fallen ever since the Supreme Court imposed the diesel ban in India. This is one reason Toyota plans to introduce the petrol version of the Innova Crysta in our country. Another reason should be the change in buyer's preference from diesel to petrol.

N Raja, director and senior vice president, sales and marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, "We have seen our sales coming down by 800 units a month in Delhi since December after the Supreme Court ban. To address this issue, we have fast-tracked the development of a 2.7-litre petrol engine. The R&D engineers in Japan are working on the new engine. We plan to launch the petrol variant of the Innova Crysta in Delhi-NCR markets by Diwali this year.

Toyota plans to boost their sales in the MPV segment, which garners around 35,000 units of sales per month. As the petrol Innova also has a good demand in our country, it will further help to boost the carmaker's sales. Thus, Toyota will be able to sustain the decline in sales and strengthen their number one position in the MPV segment.
