Toyota to consider increasing exports of Etios

Toyota is considering increasing the exports for its Etios range of hatchbacks and sedans. The move seems to be inspired by the mediocre demand for the Etios range in the Indian market and the under-utilisation of the manufacturing plant in Bidadi, Karnataka.

Toyota aims to increase exports of Etios

The factory in Bidadi has two separate units with an overall production capacity of 3.1 lakh units a year. While one of these churns out Innova Crysta and the Fortuner, the other unit is responsible for the Etios, Corolla and the Camry. While the sales of the Innova Crysta and Fortuner have been burgeoning, the same cannot be said for the Etios range. The unit which produces the utility vehicles is running at 95 - 97 per cent capacity and the other unit is running at just 50 per cent of its capacity. As such, the company has sent a proposal to the headquarters in Japan to increase its exports and to make better use of the 2.1 lakh unit capacity of the production unit.

Popular cars like Corolla and Camry have a high level of localisation across the world. But exporting the Etios seems like a viable option for other global markets. Currently, Toyota exports 50,000 cars per year to South Africa. The company hopes to add more right-hand-drive countries to the list once the proposal is approved by Toyota Japan. The plan is still at an early stage and it might be a while before the company can start shipping off its products.
