Japanese carmaker Toyota has been a strong name in the automotive segment across the globe. In India too, the brand has been known for quality and reliability. The Innova MPV has been a hot-seller for the carmaker in India, whereas the recently launched Etios Cross crossover has also been doing well for the brand in India. Reportedly, Toyota has been working on a new mid-sized sedan for India that shall compete against Honda's popular City sedan in India. The project is kept under wraps for now and reportedly the new vehicle is expected to be launched in the market by 2016. Spokesperson from Indian partners Toyota Kirloskar said, “the company "would like to refrain from commenting on any future products or plans.”

Speaking more about the upcoming mid-size sedan an unknown source was quoted as saying, “This product will be a significant offering from Toyota since its launch of the Etios and Liva did not deliver the desired volumes. The company is hopeful that the incremental volumes of the new sedan will help it utilize the second factory better.”

The upcoming mid-size sedan from Toyota is stated to be based on Etios and Corolla Altis platform. If reports are to be believed, the anticipated vehicle shall be codenamed as Etios Core or Etios C. The mid-sized segment that was once popular is again gaining strong popularity in the Indian market. Until now Honda City and Hyundai Verna has been enjoying in this segment and things are expected to heat up a little with the upcoming Ciaz launch.
