Toyota India maintained its aggressive streak in the domestic market by posting sales figures of 15,501 units for May 2012. This marks an increase of 108 per cent in volumes over the same month last year as the Indian division of the Japanese car maker sold 7,470 vehicles back then. This stupendous growth is primarily attributed to the small base figure, as the company had been adversely affected by the floods in Thailand and earthquakes in Japan in 2011. However, its chief growth driver in the fifth month of this year have been its new launches, the Etios twins, as well as the facelifted iterations of the Innova Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) and Fortuner premium Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

The highest selling vehicle in Toyota’s domestic portfolio in May 2012 was the new Innova, with sales of 6,750 units in comparison with just 2,961 units in the corresponding period last year. Etios entry level sedan was next in line, with 4,270 units being rolled out by the car maker, as against 3,412 units last year. The company rolled out 1,399 units of the Fortuner, almost twofold increase over the 672 units sold in the preceding year in the same month. Likewise, the sales volumes of the Etios Liva hatchback and Corolla Altis executive sedan stood at 2,587 and 523 units, respectively.

On these sales figures, Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director – Marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), commented, “Production was affected by tsunami last year, thus affecting sales in May 2011, with 7,470 units being sold. Last month, Etios, Etios Liva, New Innova and New Fortuner continued to show good results because of high customer confidence. The sales have been good, despite the low market sentiments. However, with the rupee weakening, we are unable to retain the current prices. We are forced to pass a part of it to our customers. There will be a one per cent increase in the prices of Etios diesel and Innova and a 0.5 per cent increase in Fortuner and Etios Liva Diesel, with effect from 1st June.”

Toyota has been working quite aggressively in India as it lags behind market leaders like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai in the country. The Etios series of vehicles has been doing well in terms of sales since launch and the company declared a 75 per cent increase in production volumes. It has recently announced that it will venture into the taxi segment, which has been a stronghold of Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors. Additionally, it launched Toyota Financial Services India (TFSI), a company that will provide car financing options to the buyers in the domestic market.
