Japanese car maker, Toyota is likely to introduce new variants of its popular Fortuner SUV in the country. If reports are to be believed, the new variants will go on sale this month; however, nothing concrete on the launch date has been revealed yet by the company. The company will launch one entry level variant that will feature a smaller, 2.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine, while the top-end variant will be offered with a five-speed automatic gearbox along with the 4-wheel drive system.

The entry-spec less-powered Fortuner will target budget conscious buyers. The 2.5-litre D-4D turbo diesel engine is capable of producing a top power output of 143bhp and a peak torque of 343Nm. This engine gets variable geometry turbocharger, which helps the motor to offer higher horsepower and torque. This engine is coupled to a manual gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels of the SUV.

The top-spec automatic variant will be powered by the same 3.0-litre D-4D turbodiesel engine that churns out a maximum power output of 171bhp and a peak torque of 343Nm. Power is transmitted to all-four wheels of the car via a five-speed automatic transmission. The base variant of the Fortuner is expected to be priced around Rs. 20-22 lakh, while the top-spec model is likely to cost around 25 to 26 lakh. Toyota is also working on the next generation Fortuner, which is scheduled to go on sale in the country by early 2016.
