      Toyota Etios Launch - CarTradeIndia Reports

      1 st December 2010, Bangalore: Toyota Kirloskar Motors launched the Etios Sedan today at the Palace Grounds in Bangalore. The Event was hosted by Roshan Abbas and Diana Hayden.

      The Toyota Etios has been designed specifically for India after 5 years of research and over 1,00,000 kms of testing, from Kolkatta to Mumbai and from the Himalayan foothills to the tip of the Indian Peninsula.

      The Etios Sedan was officially launched by Mr. Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation and scion of Toyota’s founding family, on his maiden visit to India after taking over as the Head of the company. He stated that Toyota has been launching Quality products right from the introduction of the Qualis back in 1999, to the Corolla, the Innova, the Camry, the Fortuner, the Prius and the Prado. He said that Toyota believes in keeping the customer first in al their ventures and the Etios has been designed keeping the Indian customer in mind from the Grassroot itself and is the next step to providing more quality products at affordable prices in India..

      Mr Hiroshi Nakagawa said that the Etios is very Important to Toyota and that its launch marks the beginning of a new era for Toyota, where middle class customers in India will be able to own and afford a Toyota.

      Mr Yoshinori Noritake, chief Engineer of the Etios went through the designing part of the Etios. A survey was done to study the mindset of the Indian customer, and after extensive research it was found that the Indian customer wants an affordable car, which gives good mileage, can carry 5 passengers and has good luggage space. The car is also considered as a status symbol in India. He said the 'Etios' means 'Spirit and Principle'. The Etios was designed to be an Attractive yet Quality product, which would run trouble free for many many years and would be affordable to Purchase and Maintain.

      The Etios has a smiling grill up front to put a smile on its owners face. Hood lines add a Bold touch to the car. Side skirts with chrome moulding add a bit Elegance. The Instrument panel is designed like an Aircraft cockpit and is positioned so that the driver can look at it without having to take his eyes off the road for too long. The Etios was declared winner of the 'Good Design 2010' by a panel of 70 judges in Japan this year.

      The Etios comes with a 1.5 litre, 16V, DOHC petrol engine which produces 90 PS of power and 132 NM of Torque. This is coupled with a low kerb weight of just 930 kgs which translates to an ARAI approved mileage of 17.6 kmpl. 595 litre boot space is the largest in its class.

      Noise Insulation has been provided to reduce Wind and Tyre noise. Keeping in mind the Indian summers, an extra powerful AC has been provided with air filters to keep the cabin clean. Safety features include an Energy absorption shell, Driver and Passenger Airbags and ABS with EBD. Special Anti-Corrosion Steel has been used along with Anti Chip paint near the Bottom. Special Underbody Plate has been added to avoid damage to the Fuel Lines and Cables and the ground clearance is 170mm.

      For comfort a Tilt adjustable electronic Power Steering is used. Flat bottom rear insures all rear passengers are equally comfortable. Audio controls are provided on the Steering Wheel. The steering wheel has a flattened bottom for a sporty feel.

      The Etios has 7 One-Litre Storage areas along with a Chilled 13 litre Glove Box. In continuing with Toyota's dedication towards protecting the Environment, the Etios comes is 6 Water Based, Environmental Friendly Colours.

      Mr Sandeep Singh, Head of Sales and Marketing said that Toyota has planned many marketing strategies to promote the Etios. They have signed A.R. Rahman as their brand ambassador and a Teaser advertisement featuring him should be on Air from tomorrow onwards.

      Currently Toyota will have 150 dealers by the end of Dec 2010, all of whom are committed to give the customers a Q-Class experience thorough their Sales and service Network. Toyota will also provide the option of 36 Genuine Accessories for the Etios. Toyota currently has a sales target of 70,000 units for the Etios Sedan and the Etios Liva Hatchback (which is also their production capacity).

      When asked about whether a Diesel is on the cards, Mr Sandeep Singh said that Diesel is quite popular in India and they are working torwards providing a Diesel engine in the Etios. An Automatic Transmission is currently not on the cards. The Etios 'Liva' hatchback is expected in April 2011.

      The Etios has a price tag (all Ex-Showroom Delhi) of 4.96 lac for the base 'J' Variant. Rs.5.46 lac for the 'G' and 5.96 for the 'G option pack' variant. Rs.6.41 lac for the 'V' variant and Rs.6.86 lac for the top of the line 'VX' Variant.
