One of the most-anticipated cars of this season is, undoubtedly, the BMW X3, about which, speculations are afloat right from the time when it was first time showed at the Chicago Auto Show. Though from the outer appearance, there is not a huge difference from the previous variants. However, the interiors have received quite a number of upgrades as well as changes, the biggest being the incorporation of a diesel engine. BMW has come up with a unique nomenclature pattern for this car. Instead of classifying into SUVs, which has the word utility in it, the manufacturer has termed it as an SAV, substituting utility with activity. Instead of categorising as a utility vehicle, it has been categorised as a Sports Activity Vehicle. However, the car was in the section of CUVs (Crossover Utility Vehicle) at the Auto Show.
The X3 is a sibling to the X1 and X5 and serves as their middle sibling. The kidney shaped grills make sure that its identity is maintained as the signature BMW car. The circular twin headlights at the grills make sure that the appearance of the car is upheld to that classy level. Two small intakes are placed below the grill on either side of a large central air intake. The rear bumpers and those at the front provide X3 that extra zing as far as the looks are concerned.
The new diesel engine in X3 is sDrive18d together with a manual gearing pattern, which will deliver 50 mpg. It uses a 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder unit, which will be provided in the 2-wheel drive models as well as the AWD. It is definitely, expected to be more efficient than the previous ones. As its tagline says, combining driving pleasure with maximum efficiency, the engine is expected to be friendlier when it comes to performance. The interiors have been made more adjustable with 40-20-40 rear seat configuration. But for the engine, nothing else is much of a stark difference that needs attention. The natural class of BMW is maintained and the driving experience has been enhanced to provide its customers with the usual signature BMW experience.
