Thailand's automobile industry has shown immense growth in the recent times. The automotive industry of Thailand has managed to live up to its title 'Detroit of Asia', for a long time now. As a result, leading car makers have started to throng the place. One such popular car brand, Ford Motors, has shown expressed its interest in establishing a plant in Thailand.

Recent reports suggest that giants like General Motors, Nissan and American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) have also preferred the Thailand auto industry, over Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and international markets. These companies have mulled upon investing in manufacturing and strategic research and development in Thailand.

On 9th September 2011, General Motors established its first diesel engine plant in the industrial province of Thailand, Rayong. Most of the engines developed in the plant, would be installed in the new Chevrolet Colorado truck that will be sold in international as well as domestic markets. The $200 million plant is expected to manufacture around 1,00,000 engines in 2012. Vide General Motors is believed to have invested a total of $1.3 billion in  Thailand's auto industry, since 1998.

American Axle & Manufacturing has also set up a new facility in Rayong, in order to sustain its position in the Asian market . The facility is spread across 1,38,000 square feet, and the company plans to engage 275 engineers and developers for its operations. The tier-1 automotive supplier aims to expand its market for driveline and drivetrain systems, by using the favourable conditions in the Thailand auto industry.

Nissan too prepares itself for the competition by setting up its regional strategic headquarters in Thailand. Nissan has also tipped-off to develop a manufacturing unit, in collaboration with Japanese Automatic Transmission Company (JATCO), to manufacture Continuously-Variable Transmission(CVT) units in the future.

Thus, Thailand has emerged as a hub for manufacturing, research and development,  as the country has offered an advanced industrial infrastructure and suitable production facilities to automobile companies, in recent times.
