Reports have confirmed that Tesla’s autonomous driving assistant, Autopilot 2.0, is slated to receive new hardware to make the drive a safer one. There’s a new front-facing triple camera, and additional radars around the car.
Sources claim that these major updates to the Autopilot will help the components that are already present in their current models to work more efficiently to provide a safe drive. Though the new hardware is already being installed on the new production cars, they will run the original Autopilot 1.0 software to start with. With time, the upgrades will get incorporated into the software when progress is found on the information picked up by the new hardware running Autopilot 1.0. Tesla’s Autopilot uses data gathered from high precision maps assembled from the information accumulated from the entire Tesla fleet of vehicles. The new hardware is expected to boost the quality of data being conveyed.
As of now there’s no official date about when exactly the Autopilot 2.0 will debut, but Elon Musk has teased that huge advancements to its self-driving technology are in the pipeline. That’s a lot to look forward to.
