Tata Motors have now replaced the powerful 90PS mill from the XM and XMS variants of the diesel Zest with the 75PS engine. Since August 2014, when the Tata Zest first launched, it was offered in three variants - 90PS petrol, 90PS diesel and 75PS diesel. The petrol was launched in four variants (XE, XM, XMS and XT) and the diesel was available in six trims (XE, XM, XMS, XMA, XT and XTA). Now the petrol variants remain the same, however, the diesel is now offered in three 75PS and three 90PS variants.

Powering the diesel Tata Zest is the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre Quadrajet engine that comes mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT gearbox. On the other hand, the petrol Zest is powered by Tata's in-house 1.2-litre Revotron mill mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

Another change Tata Motors has brought in is that only the top-of-the-line XT and XTA models will now get alloy wheels. Earlier all the variants were equipped with these alloys. The revamp in the Zest's line-up is to price the compact sedan competitively against the Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Figo Aspire in the compact sedan segment in the Indian market.
