A recent research from JD Power reveals that Tata Nano is slated to become India’s second best selling model in the country. "...the Nano is projected to hold the number two spot in 2011 after Tata ramps up production," JD Power Asia Pacific Forecasting Senior Market Analysts Marvin Zhu and Ammar Master said in a joint article. It will replace Hyundai i10 which currently enjoys the second position in the Indian domestic market following Maruti Alto.

The study also projected Alto, Nano and Wagon R to be India’s top three best selling models. With the Gujarat facility in place, Nano volumes are now averaging close to 10,000 units a month. With plans under way to launch diesel and automatic versions, industry sources say monthly numbers of the Nano can even reach 35,000 units by 2014-15. The Indian car market is increasing at a rate of 30% every month this FY. In the last FY, a total of 15 lakh passenger cars were sold in India. At such a pace, by 2017 approximately 31.4 lakhs cars will be sold in India.

Tata Motors also plans to expand customer base for Tata Nano as its intends to introduce the diesel variant of the model. With diesel version, the company is looking at models in the higher price range. Sources say Tata Motors will be ready with complete blueprint for diesel expansion by year-end.
