At the ongoing 2012 Geneva Motor Show, one of the largest business empires in India, Tata Motors has disclosed that its economical city car, Nano will move leaps and bounds in terms of variants offered.

The multinational conglomerate is headed by Ratan Tata, who commented on its future plans for Nano, saying, "We will definitely come out with various variants of the Nano. One day there will be a higher engine, a diesel engine and an electric vehicle variant (of the Nano will be introduced)." He also added that, "We will see a resurrection of this product as we move forward."

Tata Nano, the dream project of Ratan Tata initially was conceived as the cheapest car in the country, which gradually was priced higher due to rising input costs as well as new emission regulations and is currently priced from Rs. 1.40 lakhs. On an average, the company sells around 9000 units a month that implies low sales as compared to the production capacity.

Since its launch in India, the initial bookings for the car was commendable but with the shoot up of the price of Nano and technical defaults faced by the buyers along with the absence of modern safety attributes such as airbags and ABS, the car proved to be less attractive for the high potential India auto market.

Realizing the need for deeper penetration of the brand in the country, Tata Nano will be strategically segmented amongst its target market with the launch of upgrading features to be offered with more variants in the diesel and electric versions, the launch date of which is undecided.
