Tata Motors has been a major supplier of commercial vehicles in the country. Sometime by the end of this year, the company plans on delivering about 50 buses with 22-passenger seating capacity. Being based on a mid-size frame these busses are indeed shorter in length that the 12 meter long standard busses and is about 2 meter longer than the mini busses. The buses are also known as midi buses offer better manoeuvrability through congested areas of city. Dr Shrikar Pardeshi PMPML CMD, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has cleared the proposal for the same.

During the board meeting Pardeshi said, “After 450 buses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) were cleared, there was a proposal for 50 mini buses — each 7 metres long. However, there were no takers. Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland did not show any interest in this sector. They agreed to make medium sized buses — a 22-seater 9 metre long bus. Tata Motors bagged the bid for 50 buses.” The compact design makes it easier to glide through city’s congestion. Of the fifty busses about 30 units would be utilized in PMC area, whereas about 20 would go for PCMC area. PMPML board members have stated that these medium sized buses would be plying in Peth areas, Apte Road, parts of Pune Camp and lanes of Koregaon Park.
