Tata Motors to replace suspension components of Manza sedan, refuses to call it a recall

Tata Motors has stated that it will change some parts of the suspension of its Manza mid-sized sedan in India free of cost. However, the company has termed it a 'replacement exercise' rather than a full blown recall. The component in question is the anti-roll bar bush, which is mounted between two movable metal parts in order to ensure zero friction and to render stability to the car while moving.

An official spokesperson of Tata Motors has stated that it is carrying out the replacement exercise in order to install a sturdier anti-roll bar bush in the car in comparison to the one already present in it. The spokesperson stated, "We are replacing a plastic component called anti-roll bar bush, which is connected to the suspension of the car. I am not aware of any compliant from customers and we are replacing it free of cost."

The company has decided not to individually inform each buyer of Manza, which costs between Rs. 5.63 lacs and Rs. 7.96 lacs in India. Rather, the company's dealers and authorised service centres will replace the concerned part when the car is brought in for servicing and maintenance. On this, the spokesperson commented, "We are not recalling the Manzas. We are just changing the part as and when the cars are bought to the service centre by the customers." The spokesperson refused to state the number of cars affected by this replacement exercise and just said that all units of Manza sedan that have been rolled out since its debut in October 2009 will get the new anti-roll bar bush.

Industry speculation is that the manufacturer does not want to admit that it produced a faulty version of Manza till now and lose customer confidence. It already bears the stigma of conducting the largest ever 'replacement exercise' of the Indian automotive industry when it changed the starter motor of approximately 1.40 lac Nano cars free of cost. Even at that time, it emphasised that it was not carrying out a recall and that the new starter motor was better than the one already fitted in the affected cars. Prior to that, the company recalled many units of the first edition of Indica hatchback in order to rectify several issues.

The replacement exercise comes at a time when the company is working towards quelling rumours that it is looking to phase out several models in the country, including Sumo Spacio, Indica and Indigo Marina.
