Tata Motors has set the record straight towards becoming the country's most popular car maker in terms of total sales registered in a year. Currently, the company sits at the number three slot behind Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India who have been ruling at the top positions for a considerable period of time now. Accordingly, Tata Motors has affirmed plans to introduce six new products in the domestic passenger car market by the end of 2013, which will enable the company towards refurbishing its present vehicle portfolio.

Expressing his opinion on the company's growth blueprint for the future, Karl Slym, Managing Director (MD), Tata Motors, said, "In the next one year there will be six new offerings from us. It will be a mix of brand new models and refreshes. We see ourselves as a strong number two player and that is where my vision is for the short to medium term, and eventually become the number one in the long term."

Slym joined the Tata Motors in September 2012 as its MD and the decision was rushed ahead of the scheduled date of October 1, 2012. Before joining the Tata Group, Slym worked as the India Head of General Motors and has immediately underlined an aggressive strategy towards the domestic automotive sector.

Speaking on the current reception and popularity of Tata Motors' among the Indian car enthusiasts, Slym said, "We need to go to the market where the customers are. We do have good products such as the Nano, Manza and Aria. But those are not selling well as much as we would like to because we are not there where the customers are."

When enquired about how Tata Motors is going to check the dominance of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, Slym said, "We need to have more presence in the volume segment, where 70 per cent of sales are from small cars. Not only that we also need to be present in the SUV segment, where we have just introduced the Safari Storme to add to the existing Safari."

Considering Slym's glorious future estimates, they seem obviously difficult and Tata Motors' will have to make some ground breaking changes to accomplish them. With the ever so strong presence of Maruti and Hyundai, which have been reinforced with continues adulation and respect by Indian consumers; Tata will have to do more than just keep adding new entrants to its existing product fleet. At present, the biggest challenge coming up against Slym's estimates is the uninspiring appeal of the Tata Motors' products, which are sold more in the taxi business rather than by the average Indian consumers.

Tata Motors produce well built cars that are both sturdy and robust, besides requiring lower maintenance. However, it is the quality factor that leaves a prospective buyer wondering about whether going for the build character and compromising on the below par looks of interior and exterior finishing of the Tata products. The company needs to immediately resolve the unappealing flaws of its products as the route towards the top position in Indian passenger car market, seems like a really long trip.
