In July 2012, Tata Motors managed to sell a total of 26,240 units of their vehicles in the Indian auto market as compared to M&M’s units in the same month. The total sales of Tata Motors in the first four months of this quarter (April to July’12) stood higher at 86,679 units as compared to M&M’s 83,515 units in the same period.

It is to be mentioned here that M&M had snatched the position of third largest passenger vehicle maker’s position from Tata Motors in the Q1 FY2012-13.

Speaking to ET, Mr. Pravin Shah, chief executive, automotive, Mahindra & Mahindra, said, "We don't chase numbers or specific number position in the market. It is clear we have been bucking the trend and growing in double digits and all our products are in demand. We rely on pull strategy rather than push strategy. Plus, there is not much distortion between our wholesale and retail sales numbers."
