Following months of spy shots and endless speculations, Tata has finally flagged off the first batch of its compact SUV, the Nexon from its Ranjangaon facility. The Nexon is Tata’s fourth car in the new generation of passenger vehicles under the brand’s IMPACT design philosophy.

Developed in-house at Tata’s Pune facility, the Nexon has been conceived with inputs from global tech suppliers like AVL, Bosch, Mahale and Honeywell. It will be available with Revotron petrol and Revotorq diesel engine options. The Revotron engine will be manufactured at the Sanand facility while the Revotorq engine will be produced at the Ranjangaon facility. The Nexon will be the first in its segment to feature multi drive modes – Eco, City, and Sport. Standard features, meanwhile, will include a touchscreen audio system, electrically adjustable mirrors, climate control and a few more on the top-spec trims.

The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol is a 3-cylinder unit which develops 110bhp and 170Nm of torque. It will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. What’s bound to be more popular though is the diesel Nexon which features a 1496cc motor producing an identical 110bhp but a lot more torque, at 260Nm. The diesel also gets a 6-speed manual that should aid drivability and fuel efficiency.

Tata has made it official that it will soon dispatch the cars to dealerships across the country in a phased manner. When launched during this festive season, the Nexon will be seen taking on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the Ford EcoSport.
