The SMG was established in 2014 and is Suzuki’s first 100 per cent investment for automobile production company in India. The Gujarat facility will be recognised as an export hub for the Japanese manufacturer. The vehicles produced here will be exported to international markets of Europe, Africa, and Japan. According to Suzuki, by recognising it as a different manufacturing company from Maruti Suzuki, the company aims to enhance productivity and quality of Suzuki automobiles through their mutual thriving and challenging.

At first, the Baleno hatchback will be produced in Gujarat for sales through Nexa in India. Gradually the production will be increased depending upon the market demands. The plant will have an initial production capacity of 250,000 vehicles a year. According to the manufacturer, the two plants in Gurgaon and Manesar produced around 1,515 thousand units in 2016. Both the plants are operating at full capacity. Once the production starts in Gujarat, it would help Maruti Suzuki bring down the waiting period of the Baleno.
