Suzuki accepts following improper fuel-efficiency testing procedure

Suzuki Japan has accepted that improper procedures were used for the fuel efficiency tests of some of their cars. About 16 vehicles including S-Cross, Swift, Wagon R and India-made Baleno have come under scrutiny for making wrong fuel efficiency claims. The Suzuki fuel efficiency issue comes close on the heels of the Mitsubishi issue where the car maker has admitted to have fudged the fuel-efficiency claims for some of its cars sold in Japan.

The company claims that it did not see a signification variation in spite of the improper procedures. In comparison to the earlier figures, the values have reportedly remained within the range of measurement deviation. Discrepancies were reported when Suzuki’s emission and fuel-efficiency road testing methods did not follow procedures prescribed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan.

However, the Maruti Suzuki cars sold in India are not affected as local norms give out fuel efficiency figures stated by the ARAI, who conducts laboratory tests as per Indian driving cycle. Speaking about it, Maruti Suzuki spokesperson commented, “The system of conducting vehicle mileage tests in India is distinct from the one in Japan. In India, all vehicles are tested for road load and emissions by government approved agencies like ARAI, icat and VRDE.” Based on test reports, the automaker voluntarily declares fuel efficiency of its vehicles.
