Go Green is the new mantra for the new generation. Growing ecological concerns have encouraged a team of mechanical engineers to work on a solar powered car. The 11 member team has reportedly spent over 20 months on the project that began earlier last year. The students are soon due to complete the four year course from Amity University. The students had to manage exams, lectures and projects simultaneously while working on the team’s solar car project. Speaking more on the occasion, Ankit Gupta, a final year student of mechanical engineering, said, “Earlier, we used to invest our weekends in the solar car but to expedite the project, we started working two to three hours daily on the project after the classes would get over.”

The solar car is basically a single seater vehicle that has about four solar panels with a current of about seven amperes with electric potential of about 53 volts each. The vehicle os capable of attaining speeds of up to 50km/hr and can be driven for about 300-400kms on a full charge. Ankit Gupta further added, “We made the car's hood detachable which makes the vehicle easy to maintain. The way battery-operated car Reva became a popular vehicle on the city roads, our solar car can also be commercially successful if we get financial support from an automobile company."

Speaking more on the vehicle, Sarthak Vashisth, one of the member from the team and also a final year student of electrical engineering said, "After the students from the mechanical stream finished the chassis, I looked after the solar panels and fixed the electric connections." The team also expects to showcase their work in the next year’s Auto Expo event due to be held in Delhi and would also try to get their innovation patented. The innovative solar car was also demonstrated to University’s Chancellor and Vice Chancellor at a recent event and the team of students have also received an appreciation letter for the same.
