Czech automaker Skoda is reportedly working on developing its very own electric car that might go on sale sometime in 2020/21. Based on Volkswagen Group’s ‘MEB’ battery-electric platform, it is expected that this variant would open avenues to introducing electric variants in other models too. In order to deliver a reliable product, Skoda engineers are closely associated with the planning team which is working on Volkswagen Group battery electric technology.

The innovative technology enables charging in just about 15 minutes and helps the vehicle cover a distance of about 480 kilometres on a full charge. Moreover, it is said that the overall cost will be well below a regular combustion engine. As revealed to Autocar, Bernhard Maier, Skoda chairman said, “The group is working on a modular, new electric platform and we are in the team. There is no alternative to electrification. We have to tackle it.”

Earlier this year, the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas featured the VW Budd-e MPV concept. The model was indeed the first one to be based on MEB architecture that is specifically developed for electric cars. Like Skoda’s Vision S plug-in hybrid concept showcased in Geneva, the upcoming electric vehicle will get flat, within floor batteries. This would mean that the vehicle would get space for the third row, which was not possible earlier as batteries took out a major portion from the boot space.

The company has not revealed technical details of the vehicle yet. However, going by the reports, the new all-electric model shall get roomy interiors and be more practical for everyday usage. The first model to get Skoda’s electric powertrain will be the plug-in Superb that might launch sometime in 2019.
