It´s just been two days since Skoda’s Karoq compact SUV was officially introduced to the international arena at Stockholm, and already the hype regarding a vRS model has surfaced amidst the automotive fraternity.

Skoda to consider building a Karoq vRS variant

It all began when Skoda boss, Bernhard Maier told reporters that there’s a demand for an SUV with a vRS badge, and that the Karoq has the potential to be that SUV. Ever since, rumours have been doing the rounds that Skoda may currently be developing a vRS iteration of the Karoq compact SUV. But which power-plant would be appropriate for such a performance-oriented application? It is believed that the 300bhp four-cylinder motor that powers the group’s SEAT Ateca Cupra has just the right recipe for success. However, Skoda remains silent on the matter and has not divulged any details yet.

Until then, of course, Skoda’s Karoq will continue to be powered by the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre diesel engines along with the 1.6-litre and the 2.0-litre petrol motors. These will use either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG ‘box with optional 4X4 capability on some of these engines. We have already disclosed that Skoda’s Karoq is set to replace the Yeti, and will be launched in India by the last quarter of 2017.

Stay tuned to CarTrade for more news on Skoda’s plans for the Karoq vRS in the months to come.
