Skoda Auto, the completely owned division of Volkswagen Group, extended its prize platform in 2011 to honour the artists at the beginning of their future with Breakthrough Artist Award. This award addresses the young artists, under 45 years, who are selected through their debut solo exhibitions in the country.

Supported by Art India, the Breakthrough Artist Award is known as one of the most reckoned art magazines for more than a decade across the length and breadth of the country. Followed by its collaboration with ART India, Skoda prizes also support the development of critical dialogue and writing, regarding the Indian traditional art.

This artist award targets to exhibit the potential of emerging artists who are currently at the initial steps of their careers and also helping them to garner exposure to a magnitude of audience. The first Breakthrough Artist award was won by Madhuban Mitra and Manas Bhattacharya, who both were provided with a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. For 2012, this honour will be offered with a collaboration of Art India magazine, taking the amount of cash prize to Rs. 10,00,000. And the runners-up will be invited to take part in the international residencies, backed by Prohelvetia, the Swiss Arts Council.

It must be noted that the shortlist of 2012's Breakthrough Artist Award will be organised parallel to the solo show of Bani Abadi, “Then It Was Moulded Anew”, which is scheduled at Experimenter in Kolkata on December 5, 2012. With this show, the organisers are planning to bring together the important work bodies, which were all showcased at the international venues in 2012 and are now gearing up for the first time in India.

On this occasion, the Director of art at Skoda Prize, Girish Shahane quoted, “We're delighted to have onboard such a distinguished jury. We aim to build on the reputation the award has established as a benchmark of artistic quality, while also attracting new voices through the Breakthrough Artist Award.”

Interestingly, Skoda Prize happens to be the most prestigious honour in the country's visual arts scene. It symbolises innovation, advanced work demonstrating vision and a deep knowledge of material as well as form. Skoda Prize is supported by a jury of impeccable credentials, an expertise team of advisers and a management group of proven potential. An initiative of Seventy EMG Arts, the Skoda Prize is visited by thousands of individuals every year and is recognised as the country's highly regarded traditional artists.

In past, the jury of this event included the names of some favourite personalities including collector Kiran Nadar, Tasneem Mehta (Managing Trustee and Honorary Director of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum), artist Vivan Sundaram, Heike Munder (Director of the Migros Museum für gegenwartskunst, Zürich) and Pooja Sood (the Director of Khoj).
