Volkswagen Group owned company Skoda launched the much awaited third generation Skoda Octavia in October amidst a lot of hype and buzz. This car was expected to improve the market share of the Czech-based auto maker in India as the past few months had not been so good. To a certain extent, this executive sedan has lived up to its expectations and registering good figures. According to recent reports, this sedan has reached a booking mark of 1000 in a space of three weeks, which can be considered as quite impressive. Now, in order to capitalise on this and increase sales, Skoda has now made the 1.8-litre version more affordable by launching it in the Ambition trim level as well.

Industry experts feel that this is a good move by Skoda and would help them generate higher profit levels. Now, according to sources, the 1.8-litre TSI version of the new Skoda Octavia can be purchased in the Ambition trim level at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 16.85 lakh (Mumbai). This is a significant price cut when compared to the top-spec Elegance trim, which is around Rs. 2 lakh more expensive than the Ambition guise. Skoda, according to reports, is willing to be to quite aggressive in its pricing strategy in order to gain some momentum in the Indian market. However, to make the 1.8-litre TSI version available at a cheap price, the company has also reduced a considerable number of features.

Sources close to this development have suggested that Skoda has considerably reduced the entire package to accommodate an aggressive pricing stance. To make this car more affordable, the auto maker has not included Xenon headlamps with daytime running lamps, panoramic sunroof, headlamp washers and cruise control. In addition to these, this new version of Skoda Octavia will also come without front parking sensors and electrically adjustable driver’s seat (12-way). Car makers in India have been adopting this strategy off late to make their products more affordable. Experts feel that this strategy is likely to work out well as price of a vehicle is the biggest factor that influences the decision of buyers. Thereby, companies are targeting that specific thought process and launching products in India. In fact, only recently, Audi launched a low-cost variant of one of its models, which was offered without a list of top notch features.

However, there are still a number of features that have been included in the Ambition TSI trim level of Skoda Octavia, which has just been launched. Standard equipment like electric mirrors, climate control, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), touchscreen infotainment system and dual airbags are going to be available in this sedan. This model from Skoda is available in both diesel and petrol engine options. While there are two options in terms of petrol engines, 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre, diesel Octavia comes powered by the 2.0-litre CDI drivetrain. Lower level trims of this sedan, available in both petrol and diesel, are called Active and Ambition while the top-spec guise is known as Elegance.

The 1.4-litre Skoda Octavia comes with a six-speed manual gearbox that is fully synchronised. This variant of Octavia can generate an output of around 138 bhp along with a peak torque of 250 Nm. On the other hand, the higher-end petrol version, running on a 1.8-litre engine that is mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission, has the ability to produce an output of around 178 bhp. Critics have praised Skoda for performance, class and sophistication levels of this car. Also, a number of technology features have been included in this car to enhance comfort and convenience levels.
