Maruti Suzuki sold a cumulative of 1.49 lakh units of passenger vehicles including exports last month, a record for September sales till date. It also turned out to be a record for highest sales in a month in the annals of Maruti Suzuki posting a 31.1 per cent growth year on year as compared to the sales in September 2015.

Even on a month on month basis, Maruti’s cumulative sales have grown from 1.32 lakh units in August when Maruti Suzuki had posted a strong 26 per cent growth in sales. A huge chunk of Maruti sales is generated in the mini and compact car segments. Alto along with the Wagon R sold 44,395 units combined as compared to the near 35,000 units in September 2015.

The compact segment that includes the evergreen twins Swift and Swift Dzire along with the Celerio, Ritz and the Baleno managed total sales of 50,324 units as against the 44,826 units September last year. It is the C-segment where Maruti is slowly establishing itself. The Ciaz sedan has grown from 4291 units to 6544 units for the month of September year on year, up by more than 50 per cent.

With the Vitara leading the charge in the UV segment that consists of the S-Cross, Ertiga and the made-to-order Gypsy, the sales have increased to 18,423 units in September from the 16,806 units last month. Exports have come down to less than a mere 500 units at 11,822 units in September this year.

With the festive demand yet to spike, the month of October and November will be crucial to see if Maruti can capitalise on this up-trend in the run up to the festive season. Maruti will be betting on the special edition of the Maruti Alto on offer along with newer cars like the Vitara Brezza and the Baleno along with the traditional best-sellers like the Swift twins.
