Michael Schumacher had an unfortunate qualifying race on Sunday in Malaysia as he earned only one point despite getting in the top three at Sepang. He was driving the W03, Mercedes’ new car that is said to dissolve rubber faster than any other car on the track. With this disappointing result, Schumacher lost his best chance till now in his F1 comeback.

However, Schumacher remained optimistic and commented, "We are a second behind. Last year it was two (seconds). Clearly we have made progress but at the moment we can't be expected to fight for victory."

Experts are being prudent in coming up with a list of potential winners for this season on the results in Malaysia since extensive rainfall resulted in unlikely podium finishes for Ferrari and Sauber.

Red Bull’s Christian Horner said that Sunday’s race was intriguing, especially since the fastest car in the race was Sergio Perez. He continued to say, "He was catching a Ferrari — and pulling away from a McLaren. It's difficult to draw too much out of the first couple of races."

Season engineer Joan Villadelprat concurred, saying Sepang’s result should not be taken as an indicator of the coming races, especially for the fortunes of Ferrari. He commented that Fernando Alonso took a position at the podium with a car that cannot match the speeds of McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes or even Sauber cars.
