Sales of Tata Nano, the cheapest car of India went down in April 2012. Owing to the high prices of fuel and rising interest rates, running cost of small cars increased to a great extent. These factors were also responsible for lowering the demand of Tata Nano in the country. The company sold less than 10,000 units of Tata Nano during the month of April although the car was on high demand in the last 6 months.

8,028 units of the Nano were sold during April by Tata Motors registering 20% decrease in sales. In April 2011, the company sold 10,012 units of Tata Nano. However, March 2012 was a positive period for the company as it managed to sell 10,475 units of Nano, which is highest ever in a month.

Although, the company is quite positive about the sales of Tata Nano reaching 10,000 units per month, the result are yet to be seen. At present, the company is also testing the diesel variant of Tata Nano, which will be loaded with a CRDI Diesel Engine from Bosch. As per reports, the engine is capable of generating output of 30 bhp, and it will be equipped with 5 speed manual transmission.

Price of the Tata Nano Diesel is expected to be lucrative. The company expects to attract the buyers once the variant is launched in the Indian automobile market. Due to its capacity to offer mileage of 40 kmpl, it will become the most fuel efficient vehicle in the world. At the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, the CNG Bi-Fuel variant was displayed. The company expects higher demand of this variant in big cities which have well developed infrastructure.
