The French car maker Renault is planning to invest a sum of €1.5 billion (Rs. 10,335 crore) in the Indian auto market for the development of a low cost small car in the country. The company is already in talks with the government of Gujarat for setting-up a new factory in the state.

Renault along with its global partner Nissan is developing a new small car that will be designed and engineered only after taking into consideration the needs and requirements of the Indian buyers and also the Indian road conditions. The new Nissan-Renault small car will be produced from the upcoming facility of the company that is likely to be established in Gujarat.

As per a recent statement given by an official of Gujarat government, “The Company held a closed-door meeting with top government officials a couple of weeks back.” He added that Renault is exploring possibilities of setting up a plant in Gujarat. The company is looking to acquire land near Vadodara as the location has the proximity to ports in the state.

The new Nissan-Renault small car is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 2 to 4 lakh, where it will be taking on with the likes of Tata Nano, Maruti Alto and Chevrolet Spark. The new small car can be considered a part of Renault’s top to down strategy in the country, as it looks to debut in the small car segment by year 2015, soon after establishing itself in all other high price segments.
