Renault-Nissan has hinted that it is working on making mass market electric cars that will be cost effective for developing markets like India and China. Speaking during the 2016 New York Auto Show, Carlos Ghosn, Chairman of the Renault-Nissan alliance, said that with tighter emission norms in the future, electric cars were the way forward.
He said that despite government support like subsidises and charging infrastructure in China for EVs, the larger and expensive models did not sell. Instead it had been found that most consumers opted for very basic electric cars that were available at much lower prices.
This, he said, has prompted them to develop market focussed strategies and create electric cars that would be cost effective. Ghosn indicated that it would work the same way in India where consumers gave high preference to price when buying a vehicle.
In this regard he hinted that it was a logical progression to have an electric version of the Kwid hatchback and that we could possibly see such a model in the future. Given the common platforms, we can also expect an electric version of the Redi-GO in the future.
