Three cars, manufactured completely in India have been doing great business in their respective overseas markets. South Africa has received the Toyota Etios, which is the Japanese brand's cheapest offering worldwide and is exported from India, in an overwhelming spirit. Another car causing a stir along with Etios in the South African market is the Figo hatchback from the American auto giant, Ford. Figo was the sixth most selling model in the country during 2011. Likewise, Ertiga from Maruti Suzuki is one of the top five best selling cars in Indonesia, which happens to the largest car market in South East Asia.

The Etios has been the seventh most selling car in the South African market during May 2012 and was on the 4th position in June, 2012. Selling little more than 2,000 units every month, this hatchback from the Japanese brand has huge potential to grow in near future to bag the top position. Riding on the success of Etios, Toyota is now planning to launch it in the markets of Brazil as well by September this year.

Deputy Managing Director, Marketing and Sales, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), Sandeep Singh, said, “The car has received a good response in the South African market and we hope to sell 20,000 units of the vehicle in this financial year. Etios is currently made only in India and exported from here as a completely built unit. We do intend to export kits from here for Brazil, where it would be assembled from September.”

Ford Figo followed in the footsteps of Etios in South Africa to be the first Indian car to perform really well in the global market. This car built for India by the American car maker is one of the best selling cars in the South African market and has been featuring regularly in the top 10 list. With 15,000 units of Figo exported from India during 2011, it was the sixth largest selling car. However, in June 2012, it slipped two stairs down to be the eighth most selling car.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is another car manufactured in India, which has been performing exceedingly well in overseas markets. This car has been a runaway hit in Indonesia, which is the only nation in its export network as of now. The Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) from the country's largest car maker has been the fifth best selling car over last two months. The car has been posing serious challenge to leading models like Toyota Avanza and Innova. Buoyed by its success in Indonesia, the car maker is now exploring other markets on the globe to export the car.

Chief Operating Officer (COO), Engineering, MSIL, I.V. Rao, said, “Ertiga was designed keeping in mind the needs of emerging markets and it has been well received in Indonesia. The concept of the vehicle was designed entirely in India. It is also only being produced here.”

Other cars being exported from India to overseas in large numbers include the Hyundai i10 and Nissan Micra. The South Korean car maker has exported nearly 6 lac units of the i10 hatchback to over 120 countries over last five years. On the other hand, 1.5 lacs Micras have been shipped overseas during past two years. Car makers benefit more from the exports since these assist in hedging the impact of the falling rupee that causes imports to be expensive and exports to be cheaper.
