      Quadricycle approved as new vehicle category by MoRTH

      The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has recognized Quadricycle as a new vehicle category. The government has also issued a notification on the standards for Quadricycle which includes its weight, emission and safety features. Bajaj Auto will be one of the first automobile manufacturers to benefit from the fresh development as they can finally launch the ‘Qute’ Quadricycle in India.

      To be classified as a Quadricycle, the vehicle needs to weigh less than 475kgs and pass through new safety and crash tests to determine passenger safety standards. Interestingly, the government has also permitted Quadricycle to run on electric and hybrid alternatives along with the conventional fuel. The road transport and the highway ministry has also drafted the final specification for the Quadricycle in India.

      Under new regulations, Bajaj Auto will now have to seek certification from the Automotive Research Association of India before it is launched in India. The Qute is powered by a 216cc rear-mounted single cylinder engine that comes mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The vehicle claims to return a fuel efficiency figures of 35kmpl and attain a top speed of 70kmph.
