The employees working at Gurgaon-Manesar belt have decided to take an off on February 21, which will affect the production of several main players of the Indian auto market. In Gurgaon-Manesar belt, some of the prominent auto companies are Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Suzuki Motorcycle India and Hero MotoCorp, who will all witness a loss of production on the respective day. This move by workers is taken in relation with the 2-day strike, planned by the central trade unions on February 20.

Speaking on this, the General Secretary of Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union (MUKU) Kuldeep Jhangu was quoted as saying, “We had a meeting with representatives of different unions in the region and we have agreed to go on a one-day strike tomorrow in support of the Central Unions. There will not be any production tomorrow both at Maruti's Gurgaon and Manesar plants.”

On the same lines, the President of Hero MotoCorp Workers Union (HMCWU) Kanwalpreet Singh commented that the employees at two-wheeler manufacturer’s Gurgoan plant have decided to remain on a day off on February 21. On the other hand, industry experts believe that there could be another reason as well behind the strike called by Hero MotoCorp workers. Reportedly, they were unhappy with the unsuccessful negotiation with the top level management for more than 6 months, owing to a 3-year wage settlement.

Addressing the All India strike planned by 11 trade unions, the President of Suzuki Motorcycle India Employee Union, Anil Kumar said, “As many as 27 workers unions of different factories in the Gurgaon, Manesar, Dharuhera and up to Bawal have agreed to go on strike for a day. So, there will be no production at our plant tomorrow.” He further said that the worker unions of several ancillary industries, including Rico Auto and Satyam Auto have also participated in the 1-day strike.

The main motive of this 2-day strike, as said by the central trade unions, is to put forward an agreement of 10 demands, including strict implementation of labour laws in the work places, vital measures to control price hike, end to disinvestment in public sector units and social security net for employees in the unorganised sector. Besides, the trade unions are also demanding an increment in the monthly minimum wage to Rs. 10,000.
