Many individuals consider it as a dream to own premium cars in India. Used cars in the premium segment prove to be much less expensive than the new ones. These cars are looked upon as status symbols and today, the depreciation of a used car in the premium segment is quite high. CarTrade.com will focus on three models of premium vehicles, namely Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. These are three of the hottest selling models in the premium used car segment.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class is an entry level luxury car in India, which features good looks and solid build. The design of this model is inspired by the S-Class, though C-Class sedans are sportier in nature. Prices of this vehicle start at Rs. 29 lakhs. Four engine options can be purchased- two petrol and two diesel. The power output of this model ranges from 170 bhp to 457 bhp, as the C-Class is also available in AMG variants. Considering the level of refinement, one would definitely not feel that a diesel engine is being driven. This is one breed of Mercedes-Benz, which has class written all over it. However, most buyers would be wary of purchasing a new vehicle due to its high price, but would surely like to purchase used versions of this vehicle, as has been confirmed through market trends.
High quality Nappa leather has been used for the interior upholstery. The dashboard has a grained surface and a coloured display can be seen in the centre. The steering wheel is multi-functional with a total of 12 buttons that include control of multimedia and cruise speed. The model also has sunblind for left, right and rear windows, along with panoramic sun roof at the centre. From the powertrain point of view, the engine is mated to a 7G-Tronic 7-speed Automatic Transmission. As is apparent, the C-Class is a great car to buy, but would also command high value in the used car segment due to its relative affordability.
BMW designs are always more muscular and bold looking as compared to other vehicles. The same hold true for the BMW 3 Series in India, which is a worthy opponent of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. This car gets an 8-speed automated gearbox, as compared to the 7-speed transmission in C-Class. It can be purchased from a price range of Rs. 28.90 lakhs to Rs. 37.90 lakhs. Currently the sixth generation vehicle in the 3 Series is being sold in India. A single variant with an engine size of 1997 cc is available in a petrol trim, while all others that have engines of 1995 cc and 2996 cc are available in the diesel guise. Mileage in the BMW 3 Series vehicles is less than the figures for C-Class.
Interiors are luxurious, as expected from a vehicle in this category. Dacota leather upholstery with a leather steering wheel, automatic climate control for air conditioning, a multi-functional steering wheel, rain and lights sensors and several other delightful features are available in the model. Gear shift paddles make these vehicles a delight to drive. Standard safety features such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and run flat indicators have been installed in this car. Available power output ranges from 184 bhp to 245 bhp, which is quite enticing for domestic audience. Since BMW is the top luxury vehicle manufacturer in India and in the world, the car will definitely have great resale value. Owning a 3 Series at a relatively affordable price will give a kick to many buyers.
The third vehicle in the area of great buys in the used car segment is the Audi A4. It gets brown and beige coloured interiors, which make it look bright from the inside. Many buttons are present in the A4's cabin, which may appear confusing for many. As expected, there is great amount of comfort in the rear seats, especially since most of these vehicles are chauffeur driven. Reverse camera and other features such as ABS, Traction Control, airbags and other features are similar to those available on the 3 Series.
On the engine front, the 1.8 litre petrol TFSI power plant generates a maximum power of 168 bhp. A 2.0 litre petrol TFSI is also available that generates power of 141 bhp. It is mated to an 8-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) gearbox wherein shift is smooth, but does develop a lag at times. During the drive, the A4 is very stable at high speeds. However, one can say that the BMW 3 Series is definitely more fun to drive. This is one car that is sold in decent numbers, but not as well as the above two. However, once a new A4 is launched this year, the older models might be sold a lot faster. Industry experts are of a view that it is surely a great time to secure a decent deal on the A4.
