Volkswagen has put Polo 2010 model under trial production at its Chakan plant near Pune. Polo is slated for launch in India by March 2010. VW will begin full commercial production of the plant from January 2010. The company has not revealed any final technical details of the car but according to sources it is expected to be powered by 1.2L petrol engine and a 1.6L diesel engine later on. The expected price of the car is Rs. 5-5.6 lakh.

Volkswagen intends to keep sufficient inventories with the dealers and therefore it is beginning production at an early stage. It will have indigenization of about 70-80% and will be available as both hatchback and sedan versions. Such a strategy will enable the company to keep the costs competitive and even the spare parts will be competitively priced.

VW’s Chakan plant has an annual capacity of 110,000 units but will work in two shifts in India and has only 35 percent automation. Its German plants, on the other hand, work in three shifts and are 90 percent automated.
