PSA Peugeot Citroen is gearing up to lock horns with the biggest car makers in India even though it has entered the market in 2012 only. It is looking forward to challenge the likes of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai with two cars that are aimed specifically at the masses. Being developed in France presently, the two vehicles would hit India in the early months of 2014.

It is expected that one of the cars will be an entry level sedan, while the other will be a premium hatchback, a direct competitor to the immensely popular Maruti Swift. Both the cars will be developed on the French company’s low-cost M3 platform. According to plans, these models will be manufactured at Peugeot’s new Rs. 4500 crore plant located at Sanand, Gujarat.

On this, a company official commented “The plan is to start with these models when the plant starts in two years. We will need more mass models to make our plant viable. Many different models can be made on the platform, I think around 2-3 cars will come.”

As per a local part supplier, the sedan being developed on the M3 platform is targeted at emerging markets. Seeing that the French company’s bastion lies in diesel, the sedan is expected to be fitted with a turbocharged 1.3 L engine and give stiff competition to the new Fiat Linea.

Peugeot moved its Indian headquarters from Mumbai to Ahmedabad on 1st February 2012. The company will be utilising 2012 and 2013 to create a sales network, thus reaching out to the masses. At initial stages of operations in India, Peugeot will import three models to the country – RCZ, sports coupe; 3008, a crossover and 508, a premium sedan.

The manufacturer is also looking for partners in India, but not for OEM activities. According to an official, the company does not need any assistance in manufacturing, though it will welcome any help in marketing or investment.

Emerging markets like India are vital for the Group’s fortune in coming times. It has also refrained from partaking in money-draining activities like motor racing in a bid to salvage finances for future. Peugeot did not take part in the world renowned 24 hour Le Mans in 2012, though Citroen, its sister concern, still remained a participant at the World Rally Championship (WRC).
