For obvious reasons, the sales of petrol fuel have slumped 7 percent in the Indian auto market, in the month of November 2011. The widening price gap between the petrol and diesel fuels, has forced a number of Indian car buyers to shift towards diesel run cars. The sky rocketing gasoline prices proved a major setback for the petrol run cars, which were among the hot favorites just a year back.

In the month of November 2011, the total sales of gasoline stood at 1.2 million metric tons, accounting for a sales decrease of 7 percent. The daily consumption of the gasoline was 330,000 barrels approximately during the month. On the other hand, the sales of diesel surged 6.8 percent to 5.7 million during the same month.

As per an estimate, petrol is currently about 60 percent more costly as compared to diesel. The figure was about 48 percent during the January 2011, in the national capital.

During November 2011, the total import of crude by the country’s refineries was 14.8 million tons, as per the data released by the oil ministery. The total purchase of diesel and LPG from overseas markets stood at 9,000 tons and 369,000 tons, respectively.
