There is no denying the fact that the Indian auto sector is becoming increasingly competitive, with car makers steadily assimilating high end technologies in cost effective passenger vehicles. One of the coveted technologies now available in low cost cars in India is an automatic transmission (AT) gearbox, which allows drivers to shift gears smoothly. This type of gearbox provides a better gear changing experience and enhances the driver quality. Though an automatic gearbox was usually installed in sedans and high priced cars, auto manufacturers have begun putting it in small cars.

Maruti A-Star is a small car that boasts of a responsive automatic transmission mechanism. This vehicle sports a price tag of Rs. 4.30 lacs, which is quite acceptable considering this addition. Owing to this gearbox, the car can move more nimbly in heavy traffic and move from naught to 100 kmph within just 23 seconds, not bad for a small hatchback.

Hyundai offers two hatchbacks with automatic transmission systems in India, i10 and i20. Both these vehicles have tasted immense success in the market, and variants with automatic gearshift mechanism simply add to their legacy. Sportz and Asta variants of Hyundai i10 are available with this gearbox, priced between Rs. 5 lacs and Rs. 6 lacs only. On the other hand, Hyundai i20 offers the four speed automatic gearbox in Asta and Asta (O) versions. The AT versions of both these cars are quite popular in India and have been received quite favourably in the country.

Skoda Rapid is an entry level sedan offered by the Czech auto maker in India. This car is also available with two petrol powered variants whose engines have been mated with six speed automatic gearboxes. The 1.6 MPI Elegance and 1.6 MPI Ambition versions of Rapid have this transmission system, which allows the sedan to move smoothly even in the worst traffic condition. The two variants are priced between Rs. 8.12 lacs and Rs. 9.12 lacs, a reasonable tag considering the added features.

Therefore, it can be justified that the Indian auto market offers many options to buyers who want an enhanced driving experience within a limited budget.
