In a recent development, it has been learnt that US based car manufacturer, Ford, has ordered a worldwide recall of over 1.5 lakh units of Escape. Citing the risk of engine fire, the company has been compelled to recall cars that were built from October 2011 till June 2013. According to reports, the variant of Escape that is offered with 1.6-litre engine is being recalled by Ford as it poses the risk of catching fire. Reportedly, the company is worried about the risk involving overheating of the engine, which causes the oil to leak and subsequently, catches fire.

Commenting on this, Kelli Felker, Spokesperson for Ford, said “We are committed to providing our customers with top-quality vehicles and are equally committed to addressing potential issues and responding quickly for our customers." The company has said that that it is inspecting all incidents that occurred in the Escape model in markets like United States and Canada. According to sources, the main reason that prompted recall of Escape was the gasoline smell that many customers were getting from their cars. This instance is not the first time that Escape has been recalled in such large numbers as previously Ford ordered the same for 85000 vehicles between July and November 2012.

As told by Ford in the reports submitted to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the engine fire cases were investigated soon after reports emerged of the same in August. Interestingly, the company was able to address the issue of cylinder head cracking and decided to recall its vehicles. During the investigation process, Ford also found out many problems in the fuel line leaks and decided to repair them as well.

United States and Canada are not the only markets in which Ford has recalled models for potential defects. Recently, the Indian wing of the US major, Ford India, announced the recall of over 1.6 lakh units of Figo and Fiesta Classic models. In order to rectify problems relating to steering and rear suspension, the car maker initiated the procedure to recall the cars made between January 2011 and June 2012. In total, around 166021 units were recalled, which was biggest as far as Indian car market is concerned, according to statistics. Out of the total, 109469 units of Figo and 22453 units of Classic were inspected for a problem in the rear twist beam. Before this, Ford India recalled its compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), EcoSport, in India owing to the faulty glow-plug module. With problems like these, experts are of the opinion that Ford needs to improve quality control measures in order to avoid recalls on such a big scale.
