No Splash from Ford or Maruti Suzuki

Ford Motors has denied launching its brand Splash in the Indian market. The name is registered with Ford in India and thus Maruti Suzuki had to launch its new model as Ritz in India while it is being sold as a “Splash” in the global market. Splash was launched by Suzuki in 2007 in the international market. The model is currently being manufactured in Japan and Hungary and is sold all across Europe.

Ford, on the other hand, is also not letting the brand name go nor is it using the same for itself in India. "We are not expected to use that name (Splash), because we are going to use global names as we move forward (in India)," Ford India President and Managing Director Michael Boneham. He also declined to comment whether the company is going to withdraw the name from the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks Registry in India. It had registered the brand in 2002 with the authority.

When MSIL intended to launch Ritz in India, it could not do so under its global brand name ‘Splash” as it was intimated that the name was already registered with "an automobile company" in India.
