The Japanese auto giant Nissan Motors has said that the company is yet to take a decision on carrying forward the ultra low cost car project, which was proposed in partnership with the India’s leading two-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto. The company is currently reviewing their priorities in the high growth potential small car segment. The concept of this ultra low cost car was unveiled by Bajaj Auto in year 2008 with an expected price of USD3000.

Speaking to TOI, Nissan Motor India Managing Director and CEO Takayuki Ishida said, "We have not yet made a definitive decision on the partnership with Bajaj. However, we are aware of the difficulties faced in sales of competitor cars at the lower price points, where basic customer car needs may not be fully met."

The company will be taking a final decision on marking their entry in the starting range price segment by early next year, during the closing of their annual product plan in January 2013. It has been more than three years since the Bajaj – Nissan – Renault partnership is in talks to manufacture an ultra low cost car in the price segment of sub Rs 2 lakh. However, these talks have never really reached to its fruition due to differences between partners.
