Nissan has announced that it shall move its manufacturing operations for its small car, Micra to India from Sunderland, UK by the year 2010. It shall shift its platform to its Chennai facility but India shall not be an exclusive manufacturing location for its small car.

According to Nissan India’s spokesperson, “We are shifting the Micra production as we need to take care of the volumes and pricing of the car. This is one of our largest selling models.” Nissan also plans to bring its cross-over SUV Murano to India next year.

Nissan shall use ‘A’ segment platform for more small cars after using it for Micra which would be atleast three other models. This platform shall be built in five leading competitive countries including India and Thailand as “A” platform models will be easy to source and localise in these countries.

Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, stated his long term strategy as “Our business expansion breakthrough includes plans for a family of all-new, global entry cars that will enable us to offer affordable models to a larger section of society. Our plans are twofold: First, Nissan cars based on a new 'A' platform and, below, a Nissan version of the Alliance ultra-low-cost car, being developed with Bajaj Auto and planned to be launched in 2011."
