Nissan, one of the largest electric car sellers in the world, had been conspicuous by its absence in the world’s leading e-motorsport. But that is due for a change as Nissan plans to replace its alliance partner, Renault, at the Formula E season starting later next year.

Nissan is the only Japanese auto major to enrol in Formula E despite their prowess in electric and electronic fields. Nissan taking the reins of the Formula E team will help its partner Renault to focus its resources on bringing back its competitive edge in Formula 1.

Nissan’s entry into Formula E will pit it against Mahindra, BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Citroen with Mercedes and Porsche slated to join in the 2019/20 season. The announcement comes on the eve of the Tokyo Motor Show where Nissan has showcased the Leaf Nismo, a performance version of its highest selling EV, the Nissan Leaf.
