Nissan sets world record for fastest drift using a tuned GT-R

A Nissan GT-R Nismo has just set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest drift. However, it’s no ordinary GT-R Nismo. The car that you see here, in fact, is a heavily modified rear-wheel drive GT-R designed to go sideways at mental speeds, as proven by Japanese drifting champion Masato Kawabata who was able to go sideways at a speed of 304.96kmph. The drift attempt was held during a special event at Fujairah International Airport, UAE.

The tuned GT-R Nismo used to set the record was tested extensively at Japan’s Fuji Speedway with Kawabata at the wheel. Nissan says the car was setup for agility while maintaining stability at extremely high speeds. Its twin turbo engine makes no less than 1380bhp and the car itself is rear-wheel drive, which is ideal for drifting.

Interestingly, Nissan used the old GT-R and not the 2017 model, to set this record. The latter was unveiled recently at the New York Motor Show and will go on sale soon in several markets including India.
