After being launched amidst much fanfare in 2012, Evalia, the Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) from Japanese auto maker Nissan has failed to create much of a stir in its segment. With the intention of learning from its mistakes, Nissan wishes to relaunch this vehicle in February 2013 with some changes. The Evalia has been received well in international automotive markets, but not so much in India.

One of the key flaws has been the lack of a lid in the front glove box compartment. Many customers have reported items falling out of this compartment during motion, due to which Nissan has decided to give it a cover in the updated version. Additionally, the second row of seats would get roll-down or sliding windows, which are absent in the current version that gets these in a butterfly design. Absence of roll-down windows makes it suffocating for the second row of passengers, especially during a long drive. Front seats in the Evalia may also get individual arm rests, so that more comfort can be provided to passengers, who may feel that their absence is illogical, considering the price of this vehicle.

Either Nissan may incorporate these features in the current models, or it may come out with a completely new variant. Possibly, these features could be seen in the new 1.6 litre version of the Evalia, which is anticipated to be launched in the initial half of 2013.

This front wheel drive MPV is powered by the 1.5 litre K9K motor, which also powers the Renault Scala and the Nissan Sunny. Two variants of this engine, at 90 bhp and 110 bhp, are being offered for Indian customers. It was recently used by Red Bull Racing at the 2012 Indian Grand Prix, to transport equipment and staff from one location to another.

It remains to be seen whether the new version of the Evalia will be able to replicate the success that was experienced with the Micra in India. One feels that the vehicle may sell better with a revision of price, as it is currently being sold between Rs. 8 to 10 lacs. If one considers the competition, market leader Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) offers the Ertiga at a tremendous price range of Rs 5.89 to 8 lacs. Nissan may not be up to the level of MSIL in terms of customer satisfaction and number of service centres, but it can definitely compete if it is priced more competitively.
