The Japanese carmaker tested the new generation of the ProPilot on a highly modified Infiniti Q50 sedan. The prototype employs artificial intelligence which is fed information through 12 sonars, 12 cameras, nine millimetre-wave radars, six laser scanners and a high-definition map. This hardware analyses complex scenario in real time and navigates accordingly in different City conditions, boasts the Kanagawa-based carmaker.

Along with the hardware update, the software has also been improved to wade through real-time obstacles. The technology enables the vehicle to operate autonomously on urban roads and freeways. The driver only has to select a destination using the navigation system and the car can take care of the rest.

Nissan revealed the new-generation Leaf EV with their latest ProPilot tech. It is equipped with a single-lane autonomous driving technology that can be used on highways. Other models that include the ProPilot are the Serena, X-Trail and Rogue. The Qashqai SUV is slated to join the league sometime next year.

Takao Asami, Nissan’s senior vice president, talking about their autonomous future, said, “Our next-generation ProPilot prototype showcases technology that will be available for real-world use from 2020. Today’s demonstration is another example of our successful work toward creating an autonomous driving future for all.”
